We thought of heading to Pittsburgh after we did all our plant things at Doug's mom's yesterday, but we were tired, and opted for a walk by the river in Rochester. It was a nice walk. I'm glad we went.
This morning we drank coffee on the patio. I hope now that the chairs and bench are out, Doug's mom will go out and enjoy her mornings, or early evenings. This morning could not have been more perfect. She fussed about how Doug set up the chair and table, and made him put them where she wanted them. Then the plants had to be moved. Then she brought out a small camping table that she moves around since she doesn't yet/hasn't yet decided on tables for inside and outside.
We were "encouraged" to take home some paperweights, and as my MIL is a literal certified expert on glass, she put on a clinic for me for about an hour talking about different styles and artists, including Stuart Abelman and Mayauel Ward. She has several of Ward's pieces, and I came home with one he made from a paperweight convention where he made the table favors for everyone. It is etched with his signature, and very cute.
Once we got her to the packing up phase, we grabbed showers, loaded the car, and were ready to share our goodbyes. I think she was sad to see us go. And there have been visits where I've been stressed out beyond belief. This visit was good. I left feeling a little sad to be going and wishing we had another day or two.
Hearkening back to the thoughts about going to Pittsburgh to see the city from Mt. Washington, Doug said we should go and I was surprised. He pointed out it was only about 5 minutes out of our way, we were not going into downtown, and we could just zip in, park, and go. My only concern was that there would be road closures due to the location for the fireworks viewing.
But I love going to Pittsburgh, and looking at the city from this spot. My absolute favorite. We scored a good parking spot right off Grandview, and indeed, folks were starting to line up their chairs (it was about 1:30pm) to watch the fireworks from this location. We spent some time at the overlook for the Duquesne Incline, where you can see the Point really well, and then went down to the Monongahela Incline, where there were fewer people and you can look directly into downtown.
Mt. Washington is really cool and it'd be a trip to live up there, I'd totally love it. We talked about going out to dinner sometime at the Coal Hill Steakhouse at the Grandview Saloon (gotta have the old name mixed with the new name, it's fashionable).
After about an hour, meeting a guy who biked up to the overlook and taking his picture for him, and plenty of steps, more pictures, and more gawking, we hit the road. Like I said, I wish we had one more day.
Traffic wasn't too bad leaving the area. We stopped in Frostburg to get gas, and back onto the highway. The sky was beautiful, the mountains so lush and green. It really was a lovely road trip. We started to get hungry, and got off in Frederick and went to a Roy Rogers because it was open. Not the best choice - I got the 3 piece chicken and it was dry and nasty. At least the coleslaw was awesome.
Our dog was very happy to see us, and us him.
Off to bed. Here are some pictures of Pittsburgh.
