Geoff is 26

Happy birthday to the boy, turning 26 today. 26 years. wow.

He had a very grown up thing to do yesterday and that was sign up for insurance on his own. We made some preliminary calls a week ago, and because he's not a full time student covered under his college plan, and because he doesn't have a job (because he's a student) he could go on Medicaid. The application process seemed complicated and daunting, even for my brain so I could not imagine him going through that process and then finding a new doctor. Ugh.

I could not find the equivalent coverage in Maryland that Massachusetts has, which is actually one of the best state insurance programs in the country. He wanted to keep seeing the doctor he's been seeing, so, we decided that we'd stick with Kaiser Permanente as the insurance provider and the care team.

Two hundred bucks a month to stay on the plan and that's fine for now. His coverage starts February 1st, and ends with me on January 31. So it dovetails perfectly.  When he graduates, and hopefully finds a job with insurance I'll guide him through the qualifying event change, or, he can stay on the KP plan and just change the payment method to his own bank account from mine.

For dinner tonight, he suggested we go to a pub in DC that he likes. He started going there  in 2018 when he was working for a temp agency doing construction site cleanup. He was walking to the metro and saw it, so he tucked in for a pint. Then, when he was working elsewhere in the city, he'd take the metro to the pub, and hang out there for a bit before coming home.

We parked the car and noticed a barber shop next door. Geoff has been wanting a haircut for a couple months, so we handed him some birthday cash, and told him to go on in and get shorn. I should have taken a picture of the before, the after looks nice. I'm not sure what he's doing to his hair lately, but it always looks greasy and flat, not the curly fullness he usually sports. For now though, it's short, and he can just wash and go with it.

Doug and I went for a walk, we headed up 2nd towards Maryland Ave. Then we walked around the Supreme Court building. Everything is fenced off, you can't get to the steps, so that is kind of disappointing. But it was also kind of nice because you could take a picture without 1000 tourists being all over the place and in the way.

It was a beautiful blue sky day.  Tons of dogs out, and what looked like a middle school trip of 50 kids and their chaperones, and they were adorable. I thought it was warmer out than it was, and I'm glad we were moving because standing still was cold. I wanted to get some steps in anyway.

I wanted to take a picture of the Capitol building, but the sun was in the wrong space, and it just didn't come out good. We continued on and the HQ for the Methodist Church is next door to the Supreme Court, and they had a nice sign out front.

It's too bad the congress did not start out behaving nicely and acting like they want to pursue justice and peace what with everything that happened with trying to elect the Speaker of the House. They've shown their asses to everyone on the planet. I can only hope the good people at the UMC HQ continue to send them love in such a kind way. Were that I could be so kind. Hmm.

Geoff texted us to say he was done with his haircut, and he was going to walk to catch up to us, but we told him to hang tight, and we cut our walk off at the corner and headed towards the pub. His haircut looked good, and he was pleased with it.

We went to this pub as his choice for his birthday a couple years ago, and were the only people there. I felt bad for the staff. Well, It wasn't that way today. The place was mobbed. Packed. Shoulder to shoulder. LOUD. There was a big Michigan vs. Michigan State basketball game on TV, and all the Spartans were there in full force. It must be a known go-to for those folks to meetup and do the game there. We did not expect this.

We wanted to watch the Kansas City vs. Vegas football game while drinking beer and eating wings, but. Hmmmm. no.

We ordered some beers and hung out at the end of the bar. I think Doug was starting to contemplate a move to somewhere else. It was halftime for the hoops game, and people started to leave. The dining area cleared out, and it seemed kind of funny to me.

Don't you want to watch the rest of the game? Your team is winning? This is weird but okay. We now get a table. Hooray! Your loss our gain.

They had the women's team game on in the dining room, on about 10 tv screens, and someone asked if the football game could be put on one. The bartender had to figure out how to do it but he was successful.

We had wings, beer, quesadillas, and Doug had a reuben. Geoff went to the bathroom and I asked the waitress if they had a dessert menu so I could order a slice of something for him, with a candle or something. No singing, just, a slice and a candle. No. They don't serve dessert. Boo.

Geoff suggested when he came back that it was already 6:30pm, well after the usual time the dog eats dinner. We wouldn't be home for another hour, so he was thinking we should head home and liberate him from the kennel. Doug suggested we stop and pick up cake on the way.

We went in the market by our house and Geoff picked out an Oreo cookie Smith Island Style cake, some crazy chocolate ice cream, and Heavy Seas Chocolate Volcano Stout. Happy birthday to him.

I eschewed the dessert and Chocolate Stout when I took my blood sugar and it was kind of high.

Here are the men at the pub right before we got our victory table. I asked Geoff to smile and that's what he gave me.
